On TV, the blunt-talking Marcus Lemonis uses his show "The Profit" to find struggling businesses, take a financial stake in them, and turn them into successful companies once more. It's clear Lemonis wants a smaller Gander Outdoors, and he was critical of the company's previous attempt at becoming "America's Firearms Superstore.
It's hard to disagree with his assessment. That much bigger and growing pie is what led the firearms maker to change its corporate name and begin making acquisitions in the space. It also means Gander Mountain essentially went after a much more volatile and politically charged market that has increasingly operated on a boom and bust cycle, rather than tackle the more stable and opportunistic recreational market, where the Outdoor Industry Association says spending has doubled over the past decade.
By doing so, it irrevocably hurt its chances for turning around. Lemonis was also critical of other management decisions, including the real estate it bought, its inventory purchase practices, and more, which is why he says he'd rather have 50 stores with a curated selection of products instead of stores trying to be everything to everyone.
The new Gander Outdoors will only have a handful of handguns and shotguns to sell, while fishing gear is going to be greatly expanded.
Lemonis believes that's the sort of store customers really want to shop in, and with that decision comes the risk for the gunmakers.
If you have a rent payment, a car payment, a tuition payment No matter what. Please RT and pass this along. Lemonis said he is working on repurchasing inventory, and surviving stores will be restocked and reopened. Stores that experience temporary closures to be restocked should be open by late summer or early fall. He added that customers who have gift cards should use them as soon as possible. All employees impacted by the closing of a Gander Mountain store will have the opportunity to interview with Camping World.
It's hard enough out there right now," Lemonis said. We may have to close for three weeks to get the inventory set up, repaint, retrain employees, get everyone excited and bring in some new merchandise before the start of the hunting and fishing season. Based in St. Moreland Blvd. Camping World operates a network of stores catering to recreational vehicle owners, as well as the Good Sam Club, which provides RV owners with breakdown insurance, roadside assistance and other services.
Not on the reopening list — which has evolved somewhat over the last several months — are the former Gander Mountain shops along I in Germantown and just off S. Paul, Minn. In June, after evaluating its new purchase, Camping World said it would re-open fewer stores than it first anticipated under new Gander Outdoors and Overton's banners, with a fresh offering of Gander Outdoors, Overton's and Camping World products and services.
From the get-go, Lemonis made it clear that only stores with good prospects would survive. Follow Daphne Howland on Twitter.
